Security in Asia - what do we mean by that? According to our applicants Asia has many different security issues to face - nuclear weapons, naval and border disputes, and terrorism. But, some conference panels will discuss, there are also tremendous non-traditional security issues prevalent throughout the Asia-Pacific region: food and water security, droughts and pollution just to name a few.
However, while we wait to have the chance to listen to these enlightening panels, we want to keep you updated on recent security events in the region.
(1) On February 3rd, Japan and Indonesia entered a bilateral defense relationship. The content of this agreement says that Japan will provide Indonesia with new equipment to support it in the South China Sea disputes. They also discussed the possibility of Japan providing patrol boats.
(2) Obama’s meeting with Modi in late January created a positive momentum in India. The so-called ‘break-through’ event of this meeting was an agreement on the liability law (Civil Nuclear Liability Damages Act, 2010) and further discussions on collective efforts to constrain the spread of terrorist organizations in India.
(3) In late January, a new Internet policy in China hit the headlines of newspapers worldwide. In order to gain greater control over Internet activities, actors and content, China’s government now requires every individual to register with its real name before uploading a video to the web. According to Beijing this policy is a tool to prevent abusive, violent or sexual content from spreading via the Internet.
Do you want to keep track of exciting discussion events organized by the Asia Pacific Forum, a student-led initiative operating out of the UBC Institute of Asian Research, between now and the conference?
